New Work on the Tales of Rabbah Bar Bar Hannah

For over a thousand years the Tales of Rabbah Bar Bar Hannah which appear in the Talmudic Tractate of Bava Batra (73 a-b) have intrigued, confounded, and challenged Torah Scholars, resulting in a body of commentary that continues to grow. The enigmatic tales are remarkable for their extreme hyperbole and tell of incredible voyages and immense creatures.

My wife, Rebecca Glueck, did her Master’s degree at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, and her thesis was on the first ten Tales of Rabbah Bar Bar Hannah. She brought together her skills of comparative textual analysis and interpretation along with her love and appreciation of Hazal, as well as her interests in Freudian psychology. In the opinions of her teachers (and in my opinion too) she succeeds in breaking new ground. She approaches Hazal with the reverence of a Bais Yaakov Graduate, but reveals both their human and ideological dimensions. The Tales of Rabbah Bar Bar Hannah are revealed as profound visions about the meaning of Torah, Nature, and Humanity.
